Privacy Policy

1. Who we are

SongByline™ is operated by Song Byline LLC (“SongByline”, “we”, “us”). This policy explains what information we collect when you use our website and the optional Fan+ subscription, how we use it, and your choices. It should be read with our Terms of Service.

2. Information we collect

  • No accounts. SongByline doesn't ask you to create an account, and we don't collect your name or email address to browse or search.
  • What you search for. The text you type into search is processed by our search provider and, if what you looked for isn't in our library yet, sent to our music-data provider to look it up. We keep search text in operational logs (to run the service, fix problems and prevent abuse), not attached to a profile of you.
  • Technical information. Like most websites, our hosting infrastructure automatically records things such as your IP address, browser and device type, the pages and files requested, and timestamps, in server and error logs.
  • Subscription information. If you subscribe to Fan+, Stripe collects your payment details, contact information and billing address at checkout; the billing address is used to calculate sales tax. We don't receive or store your card number or your billing address. We receive from Stripe a customer identifier and whether your subscription is active.
  • Messages you send us. If you email us, we keep the message and our reply so we can help you.

3. Cookies and local storage

  • Fan+ cookie (fanplus_customer). Set only after a completed Fan+ checkout. It is a signed, HTTP-only cookie holding your Stripe customer identifier, used to recognise your subscription on each request, and it lasts up to about 13 months. It is strictly necessary for Fan+ to work.
  • Local storage. Your browser keeps a small flag that shows you are a Fan+ subscriber (fanplus_is_subscribed) and a legacy counter (fanplus_free_remaining). They stay on your device.
  • Advertising. Ads are not shown on SongByline today, and no Google advertising scripts or cookies are loaded for them. If and when we turn ads on, Google AdSense will load only on the free version — never for Fan+ subscribers, and never on the checkout, upgrade, contact, terms or privacy pages — and Google and its ad partners may then use cookies and similar technologies to show and measure ads and, depending on your settings, to personalise them. See section 5.
  • We don't run our own analytics or marketing trackers.

You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings; some features, such as Fan+, may then stop working.

4. How we use information

  • to provide, secure and improve the Service, including search, credits and narratives;
  • to process subscriptions and recognise Fan+ subscribers;
  • if and when ads are turned on, to show advertising on the free version;
  • to answer your messages and handle billing questions;
  • to detect and prevent abuse, fraud and security problems; and
  • to meet legal obligations.

Narratives are generated by Google's Gemini AI service from information about the song, artist or playlist being viewed, which comes from our music-data sources. We don't send it anything about you.

5. Who we share information with

We use these service providers, who handle information only to provide their service to us:

  • Vercel — website hosting and server logs;
  • Supabase — database for our music catalogue and cached narratives;
  • Typesense — search;
  • Soundcharts — the music data (credits, artwork, statistics) we display;
  • Google — Gemini (narrative generation) and, if and when ads are turned on, AdSense (advertising on the free version). You can manage ad personalisation at adssettings.google.com;
  • Stripe — payment processing, collecting your billing address and calculating sales tax, and the subscription billing portal.

We do not sell your personal information. We may also disclose information if the law requires it, to protect our rights, users or the Service, or in connection with a business transfer such as a merger or sale.

6. How long we keep information

We keep information only as long as we need it for the purposes above. Server and error logs are kept for the periods our hosting provider applies, messages you send us for as long as needed to help you and keep records, and billing records as long as the law or our accounting needs require. Stripe keeps payment records under its own policies.

7. Your choices and rights

You can email hello@songbyline.com to ask what information we hold about you, to correct or delete it, or to ask a privacy question. Depending on where you live (for example some US states, the UK or the EEA), you may have legal rights such as access, deletion, correction or objection; we will respond as applicable law requires, and you will not be treated worse for using them. Because we have no accounts, we may need a little detail (such as the email you used at checkout) to find your records. To cancel Fan+, use “Manage subscription” on the Fan+ page.

8. Children

SongByline isn't directed to children under 13 and we don't knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child has given us information, email us and we'll delete it.

9. Security and where data is processed

We use reasonable safeguards, but no online service is completely secure. Our providers operate in the United States and elsewhere, so information may be processed outside the country where you live.

10. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy. When we do, we'll change the “Last updated” date above.
